Background:

Understanding the relationship between human personality and vocal characteristics is crucial for fields like forensic science and psychology.
Eysenck's personality theory provides a framework for categorizing personality traits relevant to behavioral studies.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the correlation between Eysenck personality traits and specific speech spectrum parameters.
To determine if truthful and lying vocal responses exhibit differences in acoustic features related to personality.

Main Methods:

Forty-six subjects completed the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire.
Participants' verbal responses to on-screen questions were recorded.
Acoustic analysis of the consonant /sh/ and vowel /i/ speech spectrum parameters was performed using Praat software.

Main Results:

Formant frequencies of the consonant /sh/ were significantly lower in lying versus truthful responses.
The second formant bandwidth of /sh/ correlated with Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism, with differing correlations for truthful and lying responses.
The first formant frequency of /i/ showed a negative correlation with Neuroticism in both truthful and lying responses.

Conclusions:

Personality characteristics appear to be conveyed through the human voice.
Further research is needed to ascertain whether these vocal variations stem from physiological differences or psychological effects like the Pygmalion effect.
