Summary

The term "sleep-wake cycling" in amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) should be replaced with "cyclicity." This change improves the accurate description of brain function patterns observed via aEEG, especially after injury.

Background:

Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) is used to monitor brain function.
Clinicians and researchers often use the term 'sleep-wake cycling' (SWC) in aEEG interpretation.
Defining precise sleep/wake states solely through aEEG is challenging due to the lack of physical parameters.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose a revised terminology for describing patterns in aEEG.
To advocate for replacing 'sleep-wake cycling' with 'cyclicity' in aEEG analysis.
To enhance the precision of aEEG interpretation, particularly in cases of cerebral injury or dysfunction.

Main Methods:

Review of current aEEG terminology and interpretation practices.
Analysis of the limitations of defining sleep-wake states using aEEG alone.
Comparison of the diagnostic utility of 'cyclicity' versus 'sleep-wake cycling' in suppressed aEEG background patterns.

Main Results:
