Proteomics

A proteome is the entire set of proteins that a cell type produces. We can study proteomes using the knowledge of genomes because genes code for mRNAs, and the mRNAs encode proteins. Although mRNA analysis is a step in the right direction, not all mRNAs are translated into proteins.
Proteomics is the study of proteomes' function. It involves the large-scale systematic study of the proteome to denote the protein complement expressed by a genome. Scientist Mark Wilkins coined the term proteomics...

Area of Science:

  • Proteomics
  • Genomics
  • Human Biology

Background:

  • The international Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP) aims to map and annotate all proteins encoded by human genes.
  • It fosters collaboration among research teams mapping individual chromosomes and investigating genetic mechanisms of colocated genes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To organize a collaborative network for protein mapping of human chromosomes.
  • To promote the development of proteome analysis and integrate findings from molecular omics platforms.
  • To establish standard guidelines for efficient international research efforts.

Main Methods:

  • Collaborative network organization among research teams.
  • Development and implementation of standard guidelines for experimental approaches, data production, quality control, and data transparency.
  • Integration of findings from molecular omics technologies.

Main Results:

  • Establishment of the C-HPP consortium with defined guidelines for collaborative research.
  • Mobilization of resources and collaborative networks for efficient proteome mapping.
  • Foundation laid for a companion Biology and Disease-Driven HPP (B/D-HPP) initiative.

Conclusions:

  • The C-HPP guidelines provide a framework for collaborative consensus and efficient management of international proteome research.
  • Adherence to these guidelines is expected to facilitate a comprehensive analysis of the human proteome.
  • The project promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and the integration of diverse omics data.
