Summary

Local flaps are effective for oral reconstruction, restoring function and aesthetics after cancer surgery. This study evaluated flap success and impact on patient quality of life.

Background:

Oral cavity reconstruction presents challenges in restoring both cosmetic appearance and preoperative function.
Successful reconstruction requires a thorough understanding of oral anatomy and subunit function.
Disease stage and extent of resection are critical factors in planning oral reconstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the success rate of various local flaps used in oral reconstruction.
To determine if the chosen reconstruction method impacts postoperative quality of life.

Main Methods:

A descriptive study conducted at the Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry, Rawalpindi.
Sample included 24 patients (16 males, 8 females) treated between March 2015 and March 2010.

Data collected on patient demographics, tumor site, surgical procedure, reconstruction method, and complications.

Main Results:

24 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma were treated; peak incidence in the 6th and 7th decades.
Alveolus (37.5%), tongue (25%), and buccal mucosa (25%) were the most common sites.
Nasolabial flap (25%), Karapandzic flap (16%), and fan flap (8%) were used for reconstruction in 12 patients; low complication rates observed.

Conclusions:

Local flaps demonstrate a good success rate in oral reconstruction.
Further research is needed to definitively correlate reconstruction methods with postoperative quality of life.
