Data Collection III

The physical assessment examines the patient for objective data that defines the patient's condition, and aids in formulating the nursing care plan. The purpose of physical assessment is a health status appraisal, which includes identifying health problems, and establishing a database for nursing intervention.
The principles to begin the physical assessment include conducting a comprehensive or problem-related history in a quiet, well-lit room, emphasizing privacy and comfort for the patient.

Background:

Patient-specific instruments are crucial for assessing physical function in musculoskeletal disorders.
Evaluating the psychometric properties of these instruments is essential for reliable clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify patient-specific self-assessment instruments for physical function in musculoskeletal disorders.
To evaluate the descriptive properties and psychometric qualities of these identified instruments.

Main Methods:

A systematic literature search was conducted to identify relevant instruments.
Included instruments were psychometrically evaluated using the "quality criteria for measurement properties of health status instruments" checklist.

Main Results:

Twelve instruments were identified across 23 studies, with nine versions of the Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS).
The psychometric quality varied, with no instrument fully meeting all criteria; the PSFS by Cleland et al. was most thoroughly investigated with positive results.
Construct validity, reliability, and responsiveness were the most frequently assessed psychometric properties.

Conclusions:

The psychometric quality of patient-specific instruments for musculoskeletal physical function is incompletely investigated.
The PSFS, particularly the version by Cleland et al., demonstrates strong psychometric properties and is recommended for clinical use.
Further research is needed to confirm the psychometric quality of other patient-specific instruments for musculoskeletal disorders.
