Background:

  • Laser pointers are common toys, but their potential for ocular damage is not widely understood.
  • Class IIIA laser pointers, while seemingly low-power, can pose risks to vision.

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old boy experienced blurry vision and a central scotoma after a one-minute exposure to a 5 mW green laser pointer.
  • Clinical examination revealed a foveal lesion, with ancillary tests showing retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) disruption and choroidal hypofluorescence.

Findings:

  • Laser exposure exceeding 5 mW can induce damage to the RPE layer in the macula.
  • Indocyanine green angiography indicated choroidal infarction in the affected eye.

Implications:

  • Laser pointers, especially those exceeding 5 mW, should not be considered safe toys for children.
  • Ophthalmologists should be aware of laser pointer-induced retinopathy and choroidopathy when evaluating patients with visual disturbances.
