Theoretical Approaches to Psychological Disorder01:29

Theoretical Approaches to Psychological Disorder

The development of psychological disorders, which are characterized by deviant, maladaptive, and personally distressing behaviors, has been explored through several theoretical approaches.
Biological approach
The biological approach posits that internal, organic factors are the primary causes of such disorders. This perspective emphasizes brain structure and function, genetic predispositions, and neurotransmitter imbalances. For example, schizophrenia has been associated with both genetic...
Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...
Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in situations...
Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...

Personality Disorders: Paranoid and Schizoid

Personality disorders represent enduring cognition, affect, and behavior patterns that significantly deviate from societal norms. These maladaptive traits often lead to difficulties in various domains, including interpersonal relationships, occupational settings, and overall psychological well-being. Paranoid personality disorder and schizoid personality disorder are two distinct conditions marked by odd or eccentric behavior.

Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Summary

Pediatricians frequently encounter developmental and behavioral disorders but lack confidence in management due to insufficient training. Enhanced training in developmental pediatrics and child psychiatry is recommended to improve care for these common childhood conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Behavioral Disorders

Background:

  • Developmental and behavioral (DB) disorders are prevalent in general pediatric and neurology practices.
  • There is a significant regional demand for specialized developmental pediatricians and child psychiatrists.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate practitioners' experiences with DB disorders.
  • To analyze referral practices for children with DB disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A 25-item questionnaire was administered to attendees of an international pediatric symposium on neuro-developmental and behavioral disorders.
  • The survey assessed participant demographics, training, practice patterns, and referral habits.

Main Results:

  • 131 out of 167 (78%) practitioners responded, with 43.5% in general pediatrics.
  • Only 24% felt highly confident in managing DB disorders, and many lacked structured training (35% developmental, 31% psychiatry).
  • Structured developmental rotations improved diagnostic and treatment confidence (OR 4 and 3.8, respectively), yet 32% lacked direct referral access to specialists.

Conclusions:

  • DB disorders are common, but practitioners often lack confidence and adequate training for management.
  • Limited access to developmental pediatricians and child psychiatrists exacerbates the challenge.
  • Recommendations include enhancing developmental and psychiatric training for pediatric practitioners.
