Transumbilical single-port sleeve gastrectomy is a safe and effective bariatric surgery option. This minimally invasive technique yields comparable weight loss and comorbidity resolution to conventional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

Area of Science:

  • Bariatric Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy

Background:

  • Obesity is a growing health concern requiring effective surgical interventions.
  • Sleeve gastrectomy is an increasingly relevant bariatric procedure.
  • Transumbilical single-port (TUSP) surgery offers a minimally invasive approach for abdominal procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the initial outcomes of transumbilical single-port sleeve gastrectomy (TUSP) with conventional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (CL).
  • To evaluate the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of TUSP sleeve gastrectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study comparing TUSP (20 patients) and CL (22 patients) sleeve gastrectomy.
  • Patients had a body mass index (BMI) between 35 and 55 kg/m(2).

  • All surgeries were performed by the same surgical team between June and December 2009.
  • Main Results:

    • Operative time was significantly longer for TUSP (79.2 min) compared to CL (54.1 min).
    • One conversion to multi-trocar laparoscopy occurred in the TUSP group; no conversions in the CL group.
    • No significant differences were observed in morbidity, hospital stay, excess weight loss, or excess BMI loss at 3 and 6 months between the groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Transumbilical single-port sleeve gastrectomy is safe, technically feasible, and reproducible.
    • TUSP sleeve gastrectomy achieves results comparable to conventional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
    • This technique represents a viable alternative for bariatric surgery.
