Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...
Behavior Modification01:21

Behavior Modification

Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.
Bullying02:04

Bullying

A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is bullying.
Punishment01:27

Punishment

Negative reinforcement and punishment are often confused but serve distinct functions in behavior modification. Reinforcement, whether positive or negative, increases the likelihood of a desired behavior, while punishment decreases it.
Punishment can be positive or negative. Positive punishment involves adding an undesirable stimulus, such as scolding, to decrease a behavior. Negative punishment involves removing a desirable stimulus, such as taking away a favorite toy, to decrease behavior.

    Summary

This study introduces a behavioral training program to reduce noncompliance in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), showing significant improvements in child behavior and parenting. Outcomes remained stable at six months.

    Area of Science:

    • Child Psychology
    • Behavioral Therapy
    • Developmental Disorders

    Background:

    • Noncompliance in children is often linked to hyperactive behaviors.
    • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) are common behavioral conditions in children.
    • Understanding the interplay between mentalistic and behavioral analyses is crucial for effective interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate a behavioral training program for reducing noncompliance in boys with ADHD and ODD.
    • To assess the impact of child-focused training combined with parent training on child behavior.
    • To investigate methods for altering the function of parental commands to improve child compliance.

    Main Methods:

    • A behavioral training program involving child-focused and parent training components was implemented.
    • Children were taught to verbalize rules regarding parental commands and consequences within role-play scenarios.
    • A multiple baseline design across children was utilized for the intervention.
    • Data collection included direct observation of mother-child interactions, telephone interviews, and standardized rating scales.

    Main Results:

    • The training program led to clinically significant reductions in noncompliant behavior among the participating boys.
    • Improvements were observed in overall parenting behavior.
    • Direct observations and standardized measures confirmed the effectiveness of the intervention.

    Conclusions:

    • Behavioral training, incorporating rule-verbalization and parent coaching, is effective in reducing noncompliance in children with ADHD and ODD.
    • The intervention demonstrated lasting positive effects on child behavior and family interactions.
    • This approach offers a viable strategy for managing challenging child behaviors and enhancing parent-child dynamics.
