The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacy practice
  • Health informatics
  • Medication safety

Context:

  • Limited data exist on decentralized automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) in healthcare settings.
  • This study addresses the need for understanding ADC implementation and its consequences.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate compliance with Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) guidelines for decentralized ADCs.
  • To assess both overall compliance and adherence to specific medication cycle steps.

Summary:

  • A descriptive study at a mother-and-child hospital assessed compliance with ISMP guidelines for 7 decentralized ADCs over 120 days post-implementation.
  • Overall compliance increased from 66% to 74%, with identified technological and organizational aspects requiring modification.

Impact:

  • Published guidelines serve as a valuable tool for optimizing both technological and organizational facets of decentralized ADC implementation.
  • Findings can inform best practices for safe and effective medication dispensing in institutional settings.
