Right ventricle (RV) dysfunction in cystic fibrosis (CF) is present even in early stages. These early RV changes in CF patients are subclinical and do not correlate with disease severity markers.

- Prospective Color-Doppler-Echocardiographic studies were conducted in 37 adolescent CF patients and 40 age-matched controls.
- Echocardiographic findings were correlated with pulmonary function tests, genotype, bacterial colonization, pancreatic status, and clinical scores.

- CF patients exhibited abnormal echocardiographic parameters compared to controls.
- Doppler analysis revealed elevated pulmonary artery pressure, impaired RV relaxation, and reduced systolic function in CF patients.
- No significant correlation was found between RV abnormalities and clinical parameters, PFT, genotype, bacterial colonization, or pancreatic status.
Conclusions:
- RV structural and functional abnormalities may be present in early-stage cystic fibrosis.
- These RV changes in CF patients are subclinical.
- Early RV abnormalities in CF do not correlate with disease severity indicators such as clinical scores, PFT, genotype, bacterial colonization, or pancreatic insufficiency.
