Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Drugs Used in Upper Respiratory Disorders: Overview

Upper respiratory tract disorders, including viral infections and allergic rhinitis, cause significant discomfort and disrupt daily life. Managing these conditions involves a variety of drugs, such as antihistamines, intranasal steroids, decongestants, antitussives, expectorants, and mucolytics. Specific examples of drugs in each category are provided.
Antihistamines (e.g., Benadryl) block histamines from binding. Histamines are chemicals released during an allergic reaction in the body. As a...

Area of Science:

  • Homeopathic medicine
  • Integrative medicine
  • Chronic sinusitis treatment

Background:

  • Chronic sinusitis (CS) poses a significant health challenge.
  • Evaluating alternative therapeutic options for CS is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of homeopathic medicine in managing chronic sinusitis.
  • To determine the therapeutic utility of specific homeopathic interventions for CS.

Main Methods:

  • A multicentre observational study involving 628 patients with radiologically confirmed CS.
  • Symptoms were quantified using the chronic sinusitis assessment score (CSAS) over a 6-month follow-up.
  • 17 pre-defined homeopathic medicines were prescribed based on repertorisation, with pre-defined treatment adjustments.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant reduction in CSAS scores was observed after 3 and 6 months of homeopathic treatment (P=0.0001).
  • Radiological improvements were noted in patients undergoing treatment.
  • Thirteen of 17 homeopathic medicines were prescribed, with Silicea, Calcarea, Lycopodium, Phosphorus, and Kali iodatum showing marked improvement in most cases. No complications were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Homeopathic treatment demonstrates potential efficacy in managing chronic sinusitis.
  • Further rigorous, controlled clinical trials are necessary to validate these findings and establish homeopathic medicine as a standard treatment for CS.
