Background:

  • Lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a frequent condition with incompletely understood causes.
  • Identifying etiological factors and risk associations is crucial for effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and quantify constitutional and environmental risk factors associated with lateral epicondylitis.
  • To assess the relative contributions of various factors in a large community-based cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A large-scale case-control study was conducted using The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database.
  • 4998 patients diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis were individually matched with controls based on age, sex, and general practice.

Main Results:

  • Multivariate analysis identified significant risk factors: rotator cuff pathology (OR 4.95), De Quervain's disease (OR 2.48), carpal tunnel syndrome (OR 1.50), oral corticosteroid therapy (OR 1.68), and prior smoking history (OR 1.20).
  • Factors such as diabetes mellitus, current smoking, trigger finger, rheumatoid arthritis, alcohol intake, and obesity were not significantly associated with lateral epicondylitis.

Conclusions:

  • Specific musculoskeletal conditions and certain therapies are linked to an increased risk of developing lateral epicondylitis.
  • This study provides valuable insights into the multifactorial etiology of lateral epicondylitis, aiding in risk stratification and targeted interventions.
