Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify outcomes of importance to return to work (RTW) stakeholders.
  • To develop a conceptual framework for successful RTW based on stakeholder-identified indicators.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-method concept mapping approach was employed.
  • Data involved 24 RTW stakeholders (consumers and providers) from Southwestern Ontario.
  • Quantitative analysis included multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis.

Main Results:

  • Participants generated 48 statements clustered into six key concepts: worker performance, job satisfaction, human rights, well-being, seamless RTW process, and satisfaction of non-worker stakeholders.
  • These findings highlight the multifaceted nature of successful RTW.

Conclusions:

  • RTW outcome measures must encompass all aspects of a worker's life and the RTW process itself.
  • Current administrative outcome measures are insufficient.
  • The study implies the RTW process is integral to outcomes and informs the development of new RTW outcome tools.
