Comparison of stretch reflex activities and reaction times in two separate age groups of human subjects
1School of Kinesiology, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
Abstract:
The effect of prior instruction on stretch reflex activity was compared in two separate age groups of healthy subjects. No clear differences were found for amplitude modulation and reaction items between the younger (25.6 +/- 3.2 years) and the older group (56.6 +/- 6.5 years) of subjects. A significant difference was observed in the absolute magnitudes of the background activity, short latency and long latency reflex activities which were higher in the older group of subjects than in the younger subjects.

Somatic Spinal Reflexes
One of the most well-known somatic spinal reflexes is the stretch reflex, which is activated by the sudden stretching of a muscle. This reflex involves the activation of specialized sensory receptors called muscle spindles, which are located in the muscle tissue and detect changes in the length and speed of muscle contractions. When a muscle is suddenly...
