The Becker permanent expander offers reliable breast reconstruction with low complication rates and high patient retention. This study analyzed outcomes for 276 patients, finding it a safe and effective option.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Single-stage breast reconstruction using permanent expander implants is a recognized surgical technique.
  • Limited outcome data exists for Becker tissue expanders in breast reconstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the short and long-term outcomes of breast reconstruction utilizing Becker tissue expanders.
  • To assess complication rates, revisional surgery needs, and device failure in Becker expander use.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of patient records undergoing expander-based procedures from 1989 to 2007.
  • Data collection included postoperative symptoms, complications, radiotherapy, revisional surgery, and device failure.

Main Results:

  • 313 expanders were used in 276 patients over 18 years, with a mean follow-up of 64.6 months.
  • Postoperative infection rate was 5.8%, with an expander loss rate of 3.8%. Radiotherapy increased adverse symptoms.
  • 17.9% of reconstructions required revisional surgery, and 74.2% of women retained their original expander.

Conclusions:

  • The Becker permanent expander demonstrates reliability in breast reconstruction.
  • It is associated with a low complication rate and a high device retention rate.
