The organs in a multicellular organism’s body are made up of tissues formed by cells. To work together cohesively, cells must communicate. One way that cells communicate is through direct contact with other cells. The points of contact that connect adjacent cells are called intercellular junctions.

Summary

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare soft tissue tumor. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges and successful radiotherapy treatment of a plasmablastic variant in the gingiva.

Background:

  • Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a plasma cell neoplasm occurring outside bone marrow.
  • Distinguishing EMP from other plasma cell disorders and lymphomas can be challenging due to overlapping features.

Observation:

  • A case of plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma in a 52-year-old patient's mandibular lingual gingiva is presented.
  • The lesion exhibited morphological and immunohistochemical similarities to plasmablastic lymphoma, complicating diagnosis.

Findings:

  • The diagnosis of plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma was established.
  • The gingival mass showed significant regression following primary radiotherapy.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma in the differential diagnosis of gingival masses.
  • Radiotherapy can be an effective treatment modality for localized plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma.
