Mass Spectrum: Interpretation01:24

Mass Spectrum: Interpretation

An unknown compound can be established by identifying the molecular ion peak in the mass spectrum. The molecular ion peak is often weak or absent due to the predominance of fragmentation in high-energy electron beams. In such cases, a soft-energy electron beam can be used to scan the spectrum to enhance the intensity of the molecular ion peak. Additionally, chemical ionization, field ionization, and desorption ionization spectra are used to obtain a relatively intense molecular ion peak.To...
Basic signals of Fourier Transform01:07

Basic signals of Fourier Transform

The Fourier Transform is a pivotal mathematical tool in signal processing, enabling the transformation of time-domain signals into their frequency-domain representations. Among the numerous elements within this domain, certain functions like the sinc function, delta function, and exponential signals hold significant importance due to their unique properties and implications.
The sinc function, defined as sinc(x) = sin(πx)/(πx), is particularly notable for its symmetry and behavior at zero. It...
Aliasing01:18

Aliasing

Accurate signal sampling and reconstruction are crucial in various signal-processing applications. A time-domain signal's spectrum can be revealed using its Fourier transform. When this signal is sampled at a specific frequency, it results in multiple scaled replicas of the original spectrum in the frequency domain. The spacing of these replicas is determined by the sampling frequency.
If the sampling frequency is below the Nyquist rate, these replicas overlap, preventing the original signal...
Mass Spectrum01:23

Mass Spectrum

A mass spectrum is the graphical representation of the relative abundance of the charged fragments in an analyte plotted against their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). The plot's x-axis represents the ratio of the mass of the charged fragment to the number of charges it carries. The y axis of the plot represents the relative abundance of each charged species. The relative abundance is calculated from the signal intensity of each charged species recorded at the detector. The most intense signal (the...
NMR Spectrometers: Radiofrequency Pulses and Pulse Sequences01:17

NMR Spectrometers: Radiofrequency Pulses and Pulse Sequences

A pulse is a short burst of radio waves distributed over a range of frequencies that simultaneously excites all the nuclei in the sample. Upon passing a radio frequency pulse along the x-axis, the nuclei absorb energy corresponding to their Larmor frequencies and achieve resonance. This shifts the net magnetization vector from the z-axis toward the transverse plane. This angle of rotation of the magnetization vector, or the flip angle, is proportional to the duration and intensity of the pulse.
Perception of Sound Waves01:01

Perception of Sound Waves

The human ear is not equally sensitive to all frequencies in the audible range. It may perceive sound waves with the same pressure but different frequencies as having different loudness. Moreover, the perception of sound waves depends on the health of an individual's ears, which decays with age. The health of one's ears may also be affected by regular exposure to loud noises.
The pitch of a sound depends on the frequency and the pressure amplitude of the source. Two sounds of the same frequency...

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Speech-Language Pathology

Background:

  • Cochlear implant technology continuously evolves to enhance auditory rehabilitation.
  • The Freedom speech processor was developed to optimize acoustic sound processing for cochlear implant users.
  • This technology aims to benefit both new and existing recipients, including those with Nucleus 22 cochlear implants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of Freedom speech processor technology on the Nucleus 22 cochlear implant system.
  • To assess improvements in speech perception in both quiet and noisy environments.
  • To determine the effect on audiometric thresholds.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional cohort study involving seventeen patients with Nucleus 22 cochlear implants.
  • Pre-test optimization of the existing Spectra sound processor map.
  • Auditory thresholds and speech perception tests (monosyllables and sentences) were conducted in sound-proof booths under various conditions (silence and noise at 0dB SNR).
  • Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired data.

Main Results:

  • The Freedom technology demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in all speech perception tests.
  • Audiometric thresholds also showed statistically significant improvements with the Freedom technology.
