Summary

Developing portion size estimation aids (PSEA) for Asian foods improved dietary recall accuracy. A combination of small photographs and line diagrams proved most effective for assessing food portions in Asian diets.

  • Developing and testing PSEA for Asian foods is essential for a comprehensive food atlas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate the accuracy and precision of PSEA for Asian foods.
  • To assess the effectiveness of different PSEA formats, including photographs and line diagrams.
  • To determine the optimal combination of PSEA for inclusion in a food atlas.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen diverse Asian food items were selected.
  • Small and life-size photographs, line diagrams, and household utensils were created as PSEA.
  • A sample of 80 schoolchildren (aged 10-16) participated in the estimation tests.

Main Results:

  • Line diagrams showed high accuracy (63.9%) for portion estimation, outperforming household utensils (0.6%).
  • Small photographs were best for amorphous foods, while line diagrams excelled with non-amorphous foods.
  • A combined approach using small photographs for vegetables and line diagrams for other foods yielded the highest accuracy (68.3%) and correlation (r=0.959).

Conclusions:

  • A combination of PSEA, specifically small photographs and line diagrams, demonstrates convincing accuracy and precision.
  • These validated PSEA are suitable for inclusion in an Asian food atlas.
  • The developed aids will enhance dietary assessment and support obesity interventions in Asian populations.
