Area of Science:

  • Neuropsychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Educational Psychology

Background:

  • Neuropsychological deficits are known to precede alcohol use in individuals genetically predisposed to alcoholism.
  • This study investigates the presence of such deficits in an alcoholic population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if neuropsychological deficits are present in male alcoholics.
  • To explore the relationship between childhood learning disorders and the development of alcoholism, particularly with a family history.

Main Methods:

  • Interviewed 25 male alcoholics regarding alcohol usage, elementary school educational difficulties, and family history of alcoholism.
  • Calculated discrepancies between current IQ (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised) and academic achievement (Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery) to assess learning status.

Main Results:

  • Forty percent of alcoholics exhibited a history of special education, remedial services, or grade failure, alongside a family history of alcoholism and learning disability indicators.
  • No significant differences were found in intelligence, years of drinking, or mean school grades between those with and without school services.

Conclusions:

  • Childhood learning disorders may be linked to alcoholism development, especially when a family history of alcoholism is present.
  • Special educators can play a role in the prevention and treatment of alcoholism.
