Restarting Stalled Replication Forks02:37

Restarting Stalled Replication Forks

DNA replication is initiated at sites containing predefined DNA sequences known as origins of replication. DNA is unwound at these sites by the minichromosome maintenance (MCM) helicase and other factors such as Cdc45 and the associated GINS complex. The unwound single strands are protected by replication protein A (RPA) until DNA polymerase starts synthesizing DNA at the 5’ end of the strand in the same direction as the replication fork. To prevent the replication fork from falling apart, a...
Base Excision Repair01:54

Base Excision Repair

One of the common DNA damages is the chemical alteration of single bases by alkylation, oxidation, or deamination. The altered bases cause mispairing and strand breakage during replication. This type of damage causes minimal change to the DNA double helix structure and can be repaired by the base excision repair (BER) pathways. BER corrects damaged DNA sequences by removing the damaged base and restoring the original base sequence using the complementary strand as a template.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral Surgery
  • Endodontics

Background:

  • Root end resection is a surgical procedure to treat persistent periapical pathology.
  • The study analyzes trends in root end resections performed between 2006 and 2009.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze patient demographics and tooth characteristics for root end resections.
  • To identify trends in the frequency of root end resections over a four-year period.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective clinical study of 285 patients undergoing root end resection.
  • Data collected included patient sex, age, jaw position of resected teeth, and specific tooth types.

Main Results:

  • A total of 378 root end resections were performed.
  • The majority of resections (85.45%) were in the upper jaw, with teeth in the first and second quadrants being most common.
  • A decreasing trend in the number of root end resections was observed from 2006 to 2009.

Conclusions:

  • The declining trend in root end resections suggests improved endodontic treatment success.
  • Successful endodontic therapy leads to periapical lesion healing, reducing the need for surgical intervention.
  • This trend aligns with global advancements in endodontic treatment outcomes.
