Summary

Horseshoe lung diagnosis requires more than just pulmonary angiography or bronchography. Computerized tomography is crucial for identifying the isthmic lung tissue, especially when other imaging is inconclusive.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic imaging
  • Congenital lung anomalies
  • Comparative anatomy

Background:

  • Horseshoe lung is a rare congenital anomaly.
  • Previous studies have detailed its radiological and anatomical features.
  • This report presents additional cases and comparative findings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a further case of horseshoe lung diagnosed prospectively.
  • To present associated congenital lung anomalies: a right accessory lung and a bridging bronchus.
  • To compare canine and human lung anatomy regarding midline crossing structures.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective radiological diagnosis of horseshoe lung.
  • Description of a right accessory lung with anomalous arterial supply.
  • Post-mortem bronchogram of a fetal bridging bronchus.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparative pulmonary angiography and bronchography in dogs.
  • Main Results:

    • A horseshoe lung case was prospectively diagnosed.
    • An accessory lung with a left pulmonary artery origin and a fetal bridging bronchus were documented.
    • Canine pulmonary vasculature and airways showed similarities to human horseshoe lung.
    • A common feature in all cases was a midline crossing pulmonary artery or bronchus.

    Conclusions:

    • Pulmonary angiography and bronchography alone are insufficient for diagnosing horseshoe lung.
    • Computerized tomography is essential for visualizing the isthmic lung tissue.
    • Midline crossing pulmonary arteries or bronchi are key diagnostic indicators.
