Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Summary

A new surveillance system in Michigan identified 1461 work-related burns in 2009, significantly more than previous methods. This system captured data from hospitals and other sources to better track occupational burn injuries.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational health
  • Public health surveillance
  • Injury prevention

Background:

  • Work-related burns pose a significant public health challenge.
  • Existing surveillance systems may underestimate the true incidence of occupational burn injuries.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a multisource surveillance system for work-related burns in Michigan.
  • To improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness of occupational burn data collection.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 134 Michigan hospitals, the Workers' Compensation Agency, the state Poison Control Center, and death certificates for 2009.
  • Referred companies with severe burns to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for further investigation.

Main Results:

  • Identified 1461 work-related burns in Michigan during 2009.
  • Burns were most common in males (66%) and white individuals (85.3%).
  • Wrists and hands were the most frequently injured body parts; second-degree and thermal burns were most prevalent. Accommodation/food services and healthcare/social assistance industries had the highest incidence.

Conclusions:

  • The developed multisource surveillance system identified three times more work-related burns than the traditional employer-based system (450 cases).
  • This enhanced system provides a more robust picture of occupational burn injuries, aiding in targeted prevention efforts.
