The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Summary

Listeria monocytogenes infections primarily affect elderly and immunocompromised individuals, often presenting as septicemia or meningitis. Outcomes in Quebec mirrored those seen globally, with neurological issues common in meningitis cases.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Epidemiology
  • Microbiology

Context:

  • Listeria monocytogenes infections pose significant public health concerns.
  • Understanding regional epidemiology is crucial for targeted interventions.
  • Eastern Townships of Quebec data from 1976-1995 provides a historical perspective.

Purpose:

  • To review the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical features, and outcomes of Listeria monocytogenes infections.
  • To analyze 12 cases identified in the Eastern Townships of Quebec between 1976 and 1995.
  • To compare local findings with international data on listeriosis.

Summary:

  • The study identified 12 cases of Listeria monocytogenes infection, with septicemia and meningitis being the most common presentations.
  • Predisposing conditions were present in most patients (10/12).

  • Neurological sequelae occurred in half of meningitis cases; septicemia cases had no sequelae. One death was reported.
  • Impact:

    • Listeriosis predominantly affects the elderly and immunosuppressed populations.
    • Clinical presentations and outcomes in this Quebec region align with findings in other industrialized nations.
    • Highlights the importance of recognizing risk factors and clinical manifestations for effective management.
