The initiation of cell-mediated immunity can be observed as early as the third month of fetal growth, with active antibody-mediated immunity following approximately one month later.

Summary

Umbilical myiasis, a rare condition, occurred in a 7-day-old neonate. Housefly eggs hatched on the umbilical stump, causing maggot infestation in this rare neonatal case.

Background:

  • Myiasis, the infestation of live human or vertebrate animal tissue by dipterous larvae (maggots), is uncommon in neonates.
  • Umbilical myiasis, specifically, represents an extremely rare manifestation of this condition.

Observation:

  • A 7-day-old neonate in a postnatal ward presented with an umbilical stump.
  • The umbilical stump was observed to be infested with maggots.

Findings:

  • The maggot infestation was determined to be secondary to the hatching of housefly eggs.
  • This case highlights a rare instance of neonatal umbilical myiasis.
