Summary

Oxcarbazepine (OXC) appears to be a weaker hepatic enzyme inducer than carbamazepine (CBZ) or CBZ/phenytoin (PHT) combinations for trigeminal neuralgia patients. Enzyme induction by OXC may depend on the dosage administered.

Background:

  • Trigeminal neuralgia is a debilitating neuropathic pain condition.
  • Carbamazeine (CBZ) and phenytoin (PHT) are commonly used but can induce hepatic enzymes, affecting drug metabolism.
  • Oxcarbazepine (OXC) is an alternative antiepileptic drug with a potentially different enzyme induction profile.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the hepatic enzyme induction potential of oxcarbazepine (OXC) versus carbamazepine (CBZ) or CBZ/phenytoin (PHT) in patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.
  • To assess the effect of OXC monotherapy on antipyrine pharmacokinetics.
