Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures

Context:

  • Hip arthroscopy has gained popularity since 2000.
  • Mastery of other joint arthroscopy is recommended prior to hip procedures.
  • Cadaveric studies are advised before routine adoption.

Purpose:

  • Evaluate indications for hip arthroscopy.
  • Assess outcomes of hip arthroscopic surgery.
  • Analyze patient recovery and complication rates.

Summary:

  • 42 hip joints from 83 patients (25 male, 17 female, avg. age 40.3) with >2-year follow-up were evaluated.
  • Indications included intra-articular bodies, labral lesions, and impingement; contraindications were neurovascular disorders and severe osteoporosis.
  • VAS scores improved from 7.83 pre-op to 2.01 at 2 years; 98% of patients would repeat the surgery.

Impact:

  • Hip arthroscopy allows comprehensive treatment of pathologies in a single procedure.
  • Faster patient recovery and reduced complication rates compared to open surgery.
  • Effective for femoroacetabular impingement and post-traumatic conditions.
