Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a rare condition. Cryotherapy effectively treated itching and erosion but not papules in an 18-year-old woman.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Histopathology
Background:
- Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a rare congenital condition characterized by pruritic, verrucous papules.
- This case presents an 18-year-old woman with lifelong symptoms unresponsive to conventional therapies.
Observation:
- The patient exhibited linear, verrucous papules in the inguinal and genital areas, with intergluteal erosion.
- Histopathology revealed epidermal changes including papillomatosis and acanthosis, with dermal inflammatory infiltrate.
Findings:
- Cryotherapy provided significant relief from itching and promoted re-epithelialization of eroded lesions within two weeks.
- However, cryotherapy showed no improvement in the papular component of the epidermal nevus after four sessions.
Implications:
- Cryotherapy may be a viable treatment option for symptomatic relief in ILVEN, particularly for erosive components.
- Further research is needed to explore effective treatments for the persistent papular lesions in ILVEN.

Papillary Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.
