Background:

  • Injuries are a significant cause of death and disability in the elderly population in the U.S.
  • Limited research exists on injury patterns in elderly, urban, minority communities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a comprehensive population-based study of nonfatal and fatal injuries in an elderly, minority, inner-city population.
  • To identify the incidence and types of injuries affecting this demographic.
  • To inform targeted injury prevention strategies.

Main Methods:

  • An active surveillance system was implemented in a poor, urban Black community.
  • Data collected on 577 nonfatal and fatal injuries among 12,139 residents aged 65+ over a 12-month period (March 1987-February 1988).

  • Main Results:

    • Nearly 5% of the elderly population experienced an injury requiring emergency room treatment or resulting in death.
    • The overall injury rate was 48 per 1,000 persons.
    • Falls constituted 54% of all injuries and 75% of injury-related hospitalizations. Motor vehicle incidents (13%) and violence (7%) were the next most common.
    • Injury rates were higher in older women and increased with age in both sexes.

    Conclusions:

    • Fall injuries are predominant in elderly inner-city minority populations.
    • Fall prevention strategies should be a primary focus for injury prevention efforts in these communities.
    • Understanding injury demographics is vital for effective public health interventions.
