Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy01:24

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert Ellis's...

The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

When we hold a stereotype about a person, we have expectations that he or she will fulfill that stereotype. A self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation held by a person that alters his or her behavior in a way that tends to make it true. When we hold stereotypes about a person, we tend to treat the person according to our expectations. This treatment can influence the person to act according to our stereotypic expectations, thus confirming our stereotypic beliefs. Research by Rosenthal and...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Mental Health
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Internalized heterosexism (IH) significantly impacts the psychological well-being of same-sex attracted individuals.
  • A need exists for accessible interventions to mitigate the negative effects of IH.
  • Gay, bisexual, and other same-sex attracted men are a key population affected by IH.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate an online intervention designed to reduce internalized heterosexism (IH).
  • To assess the efficacy of a digital mental health tool for same-sex attracted men.
  • To provide evidence for internet-based strategies in addressing specific minority stress.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 367 adult same-sex attracted men nationwide.
  • Randomly assigned participants to an IH reduction intervention or a stress management control group.
  • Collected and analyzed post-intervention data on IH levels from 290 completers.

Main Results:

  • The online intervention group showed significantly lower global IH scores compared to the control group.
  • Two of the three IH subscale scores were significantly reduced in the intervention group.
  • The results indicate a measurable impact of the digital intervention on internalized heterosexism.

Conclusions:

  • Online interventions are a promising method for reducing internalized heterosexism (IH) among same-sex attracted men.
  • Internet-based delivery offers a scalable and accessible approach to mental health support for LGB individuals.
  • Findings support the integration of digital tools in clinical practice and future research on minority stress reduction.
