Copper sulfide concave polyhedral superstructures were synthesized and demonstrated intrinsic peroxidase-like activity. These novel structures show potential for applications in biodetection and environmental monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Nanotechnology
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Peroxidase mimics are crucial for various diagnostic and environmental applications.
- Developing cost-effective and efficient peroxidase mimics is an ongoing research area.
- Copper sulfide (CuS) nanostructures have shown promise in catalysis but their peroxidase-like activity is unexplored.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize novel copper sulfide (CuS) concave polyhedral superstructures (CPSs).
- To investigate the peroxidase-like activity of the synthesized CuS CPSs.
- To explore potential applications of CuS CPSs in biodetection and environmental monitoring.
Main Methods:
- Solvothermal synthesis of CuS CPSs in an ethanolic solution without surfactants.
- Characterization of CuS CPSs using techniques like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
- Assay of peroxidase-like activity by catalyzing the oxidation of TMB and OPD substrates in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.
Main Results:
- Successfully synthesized well-defined CuS CPSs with high symmetry (concave truncated cuboctahedron and icosahedron).
- Demonstrated that CuS CPSs exhibit intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, mimicking horseradish peroxidase (HRP).
- Established a potential formation mechanism for CuS CPSs based on reaction conditions.
Conclusions:
- CuS CPSs represent a new class of peroxidase mimics.
- The findings suggest potential applications for CuS CPSs in biosensing, biocatalysis, and environmental monitoring.
- This work expands the utility of copper sulfide micro-nano structures.

Peroxisomal Protein Import:
Peroxisomes lack the genetic machinery required to code for their own proteins. Hence, most peroxisomal membrane, lumenal and transmembrane proteins are synthesized in the cytoplasm or ER and transported to the peroxisome...
