Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between different social network types and acute stroke preparedness behavior.
  • To determine if the marital dyad is the most effective social network for stroke preparedness.
  • To investigate the relationship between social networks and emergency department (ED) arrival within 3 hours of stroke symptom onset.

Main Methods:

  • In-person interviews and medical records were collected from 1,077 adults diagnosed with stroke or transient ischemic attack.
  • Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between social network types and early ED arrival.
  • Statistical models adjusted for demographic and clinical factors including age, race-ethnicity, education, gender, transportation, and vascular diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Being married or living with a partner was significantly associated with arrival at the emergency department (ED) within 3 hours of stroke symptoms (odds ratio = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.2-3.1).
  • No significant associations were found between household, friendship, or informal community networks and early ED arrival for stroke.
  • The marital/partnership dyad demonstrated a significant positive impact on stroke preparedness behavior.

  • The marital or partnership dyad is the most influential social network for acute stroke preparedness.
  • Social network type plays a differential role in health behaviors.
  • Interventions promoting stroke preparedness should consider the unique role of spousal/partner relationships.
