Summary

Sialadenosis in dogs presents with retching and enlarged salivary glands. Phenobarbital treatment offers rapid relief, though continuous medication may be needed for symptom management.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Comparative Pathology
  • Canine Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Sialadenosis is a condition affecting salivary glands in dogs, characterized by enlargement.
  • Clinical signs can include retching and gulping, but the underlying cause is often unknown.
  • Diagnosis relies on clinical presentation and exclusion of significant microscopic lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize clinical findings in dogs with suspected sialadenosis.
  • To examine the cytologic and histologic features of affected salivary glands.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of phenobarbital treatment for sialadenosis.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 13 dogs with enlarged salivary glands.
  • Clinical data collection, salivary gland cytology, and histopathology.

  • Treatment with phenobarbital and monitoring for clinical response.
  • Main Results:

    • Common clinical signs included retching and gulping.
    • Histologic and cytologic examinations revealed no substantial cellular changes.
    • Phenobarbital treatment resulted in rapid improvement, often requiring continuous administration.

    Conclusions:

    • Sialadenosis may be an underdiagnosed condition in dogs.
    • Diagnostic criteria include clinical signs, gland enlargement, and absence of significant microscopic lesions.
    • Phenobarbital provides rapid symptomatic relief for canine sialadenosis.
