Summary

Pulse unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) significantly increases cardiac workload, as measured by rate-pressure product (RPP). This cardiac response was not influenced by patient age, sex, or cardiovascular disease, but may correlate with ECT treatment effectiveness.

Background:

  • Limited research exists on the cardiovascular effects of modern pulse unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
  • Understanding the cardiovascular response to ECT is crucial for patient safety, especially in those with pre-existing conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cardiovascular workload changes during pulse unilateral ECT in patients with major depression.
  • To assess the relationship between cardiac response (rate-pressure product) and patient characteristics or treatment parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty patients (mean age 62) undergoing pulse unilateral ECT for major depression were studied.
  • Cardiac workload was measured using the rate-pressure product (RPP), calculated from pulse and systolic blood pressure.
