Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Carboxylic Acids to Methylesters: Alkylation using Diazomethane

Carboxylic acids react with diazomethane in an ether solvent via alkylation at the carboxylate oxygen atom to give methyl esters of the corresponding acid with excellent yields.
Autoxidation of Ethers to Peroxides and Hydroperoxides02:23

Autoxidation of Ethers to Peroxides and Hydroperoxides

Ethers represent a class of chemical compounds that become more dangerous with prolonged storage because they tend to form explosive peroxides when standing in the air. Autoxidation is the spontaneous oxidation of a compound in air. In the presence of oxygen, ethers slowly oxidize to form hydroperoxides and dialkyl peroxides.
Flame Photometry: Overview01:02

Flame Photometry: Overview

Flame photometry, also known as flame emission spectrometry, is a technique used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements present in a sample using a flame as the source of excitation energy. The concept of flame photometry was realized in the early 1860s by Kirchhoff and Bunsen, who discovered that specific elements emit characteristic radiation when excited in flames. The first instrument developed for this purpose was used to measure sodium (Na) in plant ash using a Bunsen...

Ethers from Alcohols: Alcohol Dehydration and Williamson Ether Synthesis

Overview
Ethers can be prepared from organic compounds by various methods. Some of them are discussed below,
Preparation of Ethers by Alcohol Dehydration
In this method, in the presence of protic acids, alcohol dehydrates to produce alkenes and ethers under different conditions. For example, in the presence of sulphuric acid, dehydration of ethanol at 413 K yields ethoxyethane, whereas it yields ethene at 443 K.
Combustion Energy: A Measure of Stability in Alkanes and Cycloalkanes02:14

Combustion Energy: A Measure of Stability in Alkanes and Cycloalkanes

The low reactivity in alkanes can be attributed to the non-polar nature of C–C and C–H σ bonds. Alkanes, therefore, were  initially termed as “paraffins,” derived from the Latin words: parum, meaning “too little,” and affinis, meaning “affinity.”
Alkanes undergo combustion in the presence of excess oxygen and high-temperature conditions to give carbon dioxide and water. A combustion reaction is the energy source in natural gas, liquified petroleum gas (LPG), fuel oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, and...

Summary

Methylated spirit continues to cause severe burns, especially in children, with no reduction in cases over twelve years. Stricter regulations, including household bans and specialized sales, are recommended to prevent these injuries.

Area of Science:

  • Burn injury research
  • Public health
  • Chemical safety

Background:

  • Methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) is a common household substance.
  • Despite educational efforts, severe burns from methylated spirit remain a significant problem annually.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the impact and characteristics of methylated spirit burns over a twelve-year period.
  • To evaluate the incidence, demographics, injury severity, and treatment outcomes of patients with methylated spirit burns.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective data collection of patients with methylated spirit burns from 1996 to 2008.
  • Analysis of key endpoints including incidence, age, mechanism of injury, total body surface area (TBSA) burned, burn depth, surgical intervention, and length of hospital stay.

Main Results:

  • Ninety-seven patients were included; no decrease in annual admissions for methylated spirit burns was observed.
  • 28% of patients were under eighteen, with 15% aged ten or younger. Common causes included barbecue and campfire incidents.
  • Seventy percent had full-thickness burns, 66% required grafting, and the mean hospital stay was 23 days.

Conclusions:

  • Methylated spirit use poses an ongoing risk for severe burns in both adults and children.
  • The study recommends banning methylated spirit in households and suggests restricted sales, clear labeling, and mandatory warnings.
