Background:

Jordan offers Master's degrees in clinical nursing to prepare registered nurses for advanced practice roles.
Little was known about the development and drivers of advanced nursing roles in Jordan prior to this study.
Advanced nursing practice roles are being developed to meet evolving healthcare needs.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore perceptions of advanced nursing practice among various stakeholders in Jordan.
To understand the concept of advanced nursing practice within the Jordanian context.
To identify factors influencing the establishment of advanced nursing roles.

Main Methods:

Ethnographic design was employed.
Semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation were conducted.
Thematic analysis was used to analyze collected data from five hospitals and two universities.

Main Results:

Four key themes emerged: core competencies, specific vs. generic practice areas, beneficiaries of advanced nursing practice, and drivers for educational change.
Findings align with international perspectives on advanced nursing practice.
Participants identified diverse elements of advanced practice relevant to Jordanian nursing.

Conclusions:

A consensual understanding of advanced nursing practice is needed among nurse educationalists, professional bodies, and employers in Jordan.
Developing a common framework for advanced nursing practice is crucial.
Addressing the lack of consistency in understanding advanced nursing practice is essential for its successful implementation.
