Summary

Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen (EBNA) positive B lymphocytes were detected in the acute phase of infectious mononucleosis (IM). These EBNA-positive cells disappeared as IM symptoms resolved, suggesting they are exclusive to acute Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection.
