Drug Therapy01:28

Drug Therapy

The advent of drug therapy has profoundly shaped modern mental health care, providing targeted treatments for a range of psychological disorders. Psychotherapeutic drugs, classified into antianxiety, antidepressant, and antipsychotic medications, address symptoms across anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. Area of Science:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Social Science

Background:

  • Investigated functional social support (FSS) in alcohol-dependent outpatients.
  • Examined the impact of FSS on treatment outcomes with supervised disulfiram.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the relationship between FSS and treatment success in severe alcohol dependence.
  • To understand the role of social support in recovery.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional assessment of FSS using the Medical Outcome Study Social Support Survey.
  • Study included 46 severe alcohol-dependent patients in a biopsychosocial treatment program.

Main Results:

  • Patients with a current partnership reported significantly higher FSS levels.
  • FSS did not significantly influence time to relapse or treatment retention.
  • FSS positively correlated with cumulative abstinence duration.

Conclusions:

  • High FSS is linked to partnership status and increased cumulative abstinence.
  • Intensive outpatient treatment may enhance perceived FSS.
  • Further understanding of social relationships' mechanisms is crucial for improving alcohol dependence treatment outcomes.
