Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the participation rate and representativeness of eligible veterans in the MOVE! program.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the MOVE! program on weight and body mass index (BMI) changes.

Main Methods:

  • Data were extracted from VA administrative databases in four western states.
  • Eligibility criteria included age under 70 and specific BMI or BMI with related conditions.
  • Reach was assessed by the percentage of eligible veterans participating; effectiveness was measured using multivariable linear regression for weight and BMI changes.

Main Results:

  • Less than 5% of eligible veterans participated, with half having only one encounter.
  • Participation was higher among women, those with higher BMI, more primary care visits, sleep apnea, or mental health conditions.
  • Weight loss was modest: 1.3 lb at 6 months and 0.9 lb at 12 months more than non-participants; intensive treatment (≥6 encounters) yielded greater 12-month weight loss (-3.7 lb).

Conclusions:

  • The MOVE! program demonstrated low reach among eligible veterans during the study period.
  • Overall weight loss estimates for participants were minimal.
  • Higher engagement in the program correlated with more significant weight reduction.
