Summary

Three-year-olds struggle to directly compare their visual perspective with others, even when seeing the same object. This difficulty in confronting differing viewpoints emerges later in development, around 4-5 years of age.

Background:

  • Preschoolers' ability to understand others' visual perspectives is a key aspect of cognitive development.
  • Previous research indicates 3-year-olds can differentiate perspectives when perceiving different objects (Level 1) but may struggle with shared objects viewed differently (Level 2).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether 3-year-olds can directly confront and compare their visual perspective with an adult's on the same object.
  • To determine the age at which children acquire the ability to reconcile differing visual perspectives.

Main Methods:

  • Two studies were conducted using color filters to manipulate visual perception of the same picture.
  • Children's ability to identify how they and an adult perceived the color of an object was tested through verbal responses and pointing to color samples.
  • Children's capacity to identify an object based on an adult's color perspective was also assessed.

Main Results:

  • Three-year-olds were unable to accurately judge the color of a picture as seen by themselves and an adult when using color filters.
  • This inability persisted regardless of whether children responded verbally or by selecting color samples.
