Background:

  • The rostral cingulate zone (RCZ) uses positive and negative feedback for performance evaluation and behavioral adjustment.
  • Limited understanding exists on how the RCZ and other prefrontal areas process feedback when behavioral adaptation is not possible.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural processing of feedback solely for performance evaluation, without task-specific adaptation, using fMRI.
  • To differentiate the effects of feedback's informational value versus its valence on prefrontal brain activity.

Main Methods:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was employed in a word-learning paradigm.
  • Two groups of participants received either informative (performance-dependent) or non-informative feedback.
  • Neural activity was compared between informative and non-informative feedback conditions, and between positive and negative informative feedback.

Main Results:

  • Several prefrontal regions, including the pre-SMA, inferior frontal cortex, and insula, showed sensitivity to both informational value and valence of feedback.
  • These regions exhibited stronger activation for informative versus non-informative feedback, and for negative versus positive informative feedback.
  • The RCZ was sensitive to the informational value of feedback but not its valence.

Conclusions:

  • Outcome information alone is sufficient to activate prefrontal brain regions.
  • The RCZ uniquely processes feedback information, being equally sensitive to both positive and negative feedback, unlike other prefrontal areas investigated.
