Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Interventional Cardiology
  • Cardiac Surgery

Context:

  • Aortic valve stenosis (AVS) is a severe condition linked to high morbidity and mortality.
  • Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is the established treatment for AVS.
  • Many patients with AVS are not candidates for SAVR due to advanced age and comorbidities.

Purpose:

  • To review the transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI) procedure.
  • To present cases of TAVI performed at our center.
  • To highlight TAVI as an alternative treatment for AVS.

Summary:

  • Transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as a less invasive alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement.
  • This review details the TAVI procedure and discusses its application in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis who are poor surgical candidates.

Upper-extremity Approach for Secondary Access in Transfemoral Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

Published on: August 8, 2025

  • Case examples from our institution illustrate the clinical utility and outcomes of TAVI.
  • Impact:

    • TAVI expands treatment options for patients with severe aortic valve stenosis and high surgical risk.
    • This approach can improve quality of life and reduce mortality in a previously untreatable patient population.
    • The findings support the growing role of TAVI in contemporary cardiovascular medicine.
