Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular health promotion
  • Family health interventions
  • Behavioral science in public health

Background:

  • Family-based health promotion is crucial for long-term well-being.
  • Targeting cardiovascular health in youth and families can prevent future disease.
  • Understanding attendance predictors is key to optimizing intervention effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of session attendance in a family cardiovascular health promotion program.
  • To examine the relationship between attendance and program outcomes.
  • To inform future family-centered health intervention designs.

Main Methods:

  • Quasi-experimental design with intervention and control groups.
  • 111 Mexican-American and 95 Anglo-American families participated.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Attendance predictors and outcome correlations were analyzed using regression.
  • Main Results:

    • Lower baseline physical activity and fitness predicted higher attendance for children and adults.
    • High initial health knowledge and self-motivation were associated with increased attendance.
    • Adult attendance was predicted by food record completion, low exercise, SES, family adaptability, and self-motivation.

    Conclusions:

    • Motivated families with greater health needs demonstrated higher program engagement.
    • Attendance positively correlated with improved health knowledge and blood pressure reduction.
    • Intervention strategies should consider family motivation and baseline health status.
