Summary

This study assessed worker exposure to isocyanates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during rubber conveyor belt repairs using Flexane® 80. Results indicate that typical use is unlikely to cause adverse health effects from these chemical exposures.

  • Concerns exist regarding worker exposure to isocyanates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from these products.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify airborne chemicals released from Flexane® products.
  • To validate a new method for assessing dermal isocyanate exposure.
  • To evaluate worker exposure risks during typical and worst-case use scenarios.

Main Methods:

  • Small chamber experiments to identify airborne chemicals.
  • Validation of a cotton sleeve method for dermal exposure assessment.
  • Simulations of worst-case scenarios in a walk-in exposure chamber.

Main Results:

  • Airborne isocyanates were not detected in large chamber simulations.
  • Average airborne VOC concentrations remained below occupational exposure limits.
  • Low, intermittent isocyanate levels were detected on dermal sleeve samples.
