Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Infectious disease research
  • Salivary gland disorders

Background:

  • A novel, previously undocumented minor salivary gland disease has been observed.
  • The condition is characterized as a self-limiting inflammatory process.
  • An infectious etiology is suspected but not confirmed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report and describe a heretofore unreported minor salivary gland disease.
  • To detail the clinical presentation and patient demographics.
  • To initiate discussion on potential causes and transmission.

Main Methods:

  • Case series reporting twelve instances of the disease.
  • Clinical observation of symptoms and patient history.
  • Epidemiological data collection on affected individuals.

Main Results:

  • Twelve cases of a new minor salivary gland disease were documented.
  • The disease presents as a unilateral, painful, firm swelling on the posterior hard palate.
  • Affected individuals were predominantly young white men residing in close-proximity settings like military barracks.

Conclusions:

  • A new inflammatory minor salivary gland disease has been identified.
  • The cause remains unknown, though infection is suspected.
  • The condition appears self-limiting and associated with specific environmental exposures.
