Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Ultrasound Technology
  • Interventional Procedures

Background:

  • Needle visualization is critical for accurate ultrasound-guided interventions.
  • Current ultrasound techniques can face challenges in clearly depicting needles, especially at oblique angles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of electronic beam steering in enhancing ultrasound needle visualization.
  • To determine if adjusting the ultrasound beam angle improves the depiction of needles during procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated various needle gauges (27-12) using a 12-MHz linear probe and modified ultrasound system.
  • Tested electronic beam steering from 0 to 50 degrees in phantom models (pork roast) and in vivo (thyroid, supraclavicular node, breast biopsies).
  • Compared ultrasound images obtained at different beam angles for subjective visualization improvements.

Main Results:

  • Needle visualization, particularly the tip, was significantly improved when the ultrasound beam was steered close to perpendicular to the needle.
  • Subjective assessment confirmed enhanced needle depiction with optimized electronic beam steering angles.

Conclusions:

  • Electronic beam steering offers a promising method to substantially improve needle visualization in ultrasound imaging.
  • This technique has the potential to increase the safety and accuracy of ultrasound-guided procedures.
