Culturally tailored social support interventions improved refugee adaptation by enhancing social integration and coping skills. Peer and professional facilitators provided accessible, gender, and culture-specific group support for Somali and Sudanese refugees.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Sociology
- Psychology
Background:
- Evidence highlights the importance of social support for refugee adaptation.
- Existing interventions often lack cultural congruence, failing to meet specific refugee needs.
- Systematic development of culturally tailored support is needed for successful integration.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and pilot test a culturally congruent social support intervention for Somali and Sudanese refugees.
- To address the unique support needs and preferences of distinct refugee groups.
- To enhance refugees' adaptation to life in receiving countries.
Main Methods:
- A qualitative participatory research design was employed.
- Face-to-face, gender- and ethnicity-matched peer support groups met bi-weekly for 12 weeks.
- Support included trained peer/professional facilitators, information, affirmation, emotional support, and accessibility services (childcare, transportation).
Main Results:
- Refugees connected with individuals from similar African cultural communities.
- Gender- and culture-specific groups were highly valued by participants.
- Post-intervention, refugees reported increased social integration, reduced loneliness, and expanded coping strategies.
Conclusions:
- Culturally congruent, accessible social support interventions are effective for refugee adaptation.
- Peer and professional facilitation within culturally matched groups enhances social networks and well-being.
- This model demonstrates a successful approach to meeting the psychosocial needs of diverse refugee populations.
