Summary

Projecting Earth-referenced scenes reduced motion sickness severity during simulated ship voyages. However, this visual cue did not prevent performance degradation in tasks requiring decision-making and psychomotor skills.

  • These effects can significantly impact individuals operating in dynamic settings, such as maritime environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if Earth-referenced visual scenes can mitigate motion sickness severity.
  • To assess the potential of such visual cues in preventing performance decline during provocative motion.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty subjects with high motion sickness susceptibility participated in a simulated 120-minute voyage on a missile boat.
  • Participants underwent performance tests and completed questionnaires while exposed to self-referenced and Earth-referenced visual scenes in a motion simulator.

Main Results:

  • A significant reduction in motion sickness severity was observed with Earth-referenced scenes (p < 0.03).
  • Despite reduced sickness, cognitive and psychomotor performance deteriorated across all conditions.
  • No significant performance differences were found between the visual display conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Artificial horizon devices may decrease motion sickness symptoms during passive transport.
  • However, performance measures did not improve, indicating no advantage for active vessel operation.
