Spigelian hernia (SH) is a rare ventral hernia. Surgical treatment is indicated due to high complication risks, with mesh repair showing good outcomes and no mortality in this study.

Background:

  • Preoperative diagnosis can be challenging due to a wide clinical spectrum.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present surgical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of Spigelian hernia.
  • To analyze demographic data, defect location, and diagnostic methods.
  • To evaluate surgical outcomes and complications associated with SH repair.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 16 patients undergoing surgery for SH (2000-2010).
  • Data collected included demographics, defect location, diagnostic methods, surgical approach, anesthesia, and outcomes.
  • Surgical repair methods included primary suture, open mesh repair, and laparoscopic mesh repair.

Main Results:

  • Mean follow-up was 98 months; 62.5% of patients were male, with a mean age of 56.
  • SH was predominantly right-sided (56.25%).
  • Preoperative diagnosis accuracy was 25%; 50% of surgeries were emergencies. Open mesh repair was most common (13 patients). No major complications or mortality were reported.

Conclusions:
