This study introduces a new 3-D modeling method for creating 3-D models from single images of symmetric objects. It significantly reduces user interaction by leveraging object symmetry for geometry recovery.
Area of Science:
- Computer Vision
- Computer Graphics
- 3-D Modeling
Background:
- 3-D technologies are the future of multimedia, but a lack of 3-D resources hinders development.
- Current single-view 3-D modeling methods often require extensive user input or are limited to specific object types.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel 3-D modeling approach for recovering 3-D geometry from a single image of a symmetric object.
- To minimize user interaction in the 3-D modeling process.
Main Methods:
- The approach utilizes user-marked symmetric lines and depth discontinuities on a single 2-D image.
- It employs plane fitting and an optimization procedure to generate an initial 3-D point cloud.
- Symmetry information is used to reconstruct occluded parts of the object.
Main Results:
- The system successfully recovers 3-D geometry from single images of symmetric objects.
- Minimal user interaction is required, making the process more efficient.
- Experimental results demonstrate effectiveness on diverse indoor and outdoor objects.
Conclusions:
- The proposed method offers an efficient solution for 3-D model generation from single images of symmetric objects.
- It addresses the shortage of 3-D resources by simplifying the modeling process.
- The technique shows promise for advancing 3-D multimedia applications.
